Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes faced the 5-1 Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Saturday at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

The match was immediately competitive with points coming back and forth until the ‘Canes took advantage with a 22-14 lead. The Mystics battled back with an 8-2 run but it wouldn’t be enough as Holland won the first quarter 25-22.

The second quarter was yet another close battle to begin, but the ‘Canes kept the advantage and held on 18-14 and had a 43-36 lead at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, the ‘Canes held an 11-point lead, but the Mystics shocked everyone with a comeback for the ages, winning the quarter 28-21 and tying the score at 64 apiece.

The Mystics refused to stop in the fourth quarter as they had a 14-2 run and a 78-66 lead. A ‘Canes timeout wouldn’t be enough to turn things around as the Mystics remained in destruction mode and won the quarter 22-12 and the game 100-78.

Lauren Armstrong led the ‘Canes with 18 points.

The loss drops Holland to a 3-4 record, while MSVU improves to 6-1.

The Mystics remained dominant in the third quarter, extending their lead to 69-48 by the end. The ‘Canes struggles forced another timeout in the fourth quarter, which gave them some momentum, but not enough.
