Hurricanes Weekend Preview – November 25 Edition

Two Throwback Thursday wins at the McMillan Centre and more ACAA volleyball and basketball action this upcoming Saturday highlight recent and upcoming ‘Canes action. Here is everything you need to know about this past Thursday and the upcoming weekend.

 

Women’s Volleyball

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes began this week’s action with a rare Thursday night game against the 2-4 Crandall University Chargers at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

The ‘Canes started the game dominant with a 25-15 first set win but had to tightly hang on through the second and third sets as the Chargers fought back with everything they had. Thankfully, the ‘Canes won both sets 25-22, earning the straight-sets win.

Jenna O’Neill led the ‘Canes with six kills in the match, while Morgan White added four service aces.

With the win, Holland improved to 5-2 and are now on a three-game winning streak, while Crandall dropped to 2-5 and are now on a four-game losing streak.

The ‘Canes are not done yet this week, as this Saturday, Nov. 25, they head to Fredericton, New Brunswick to play the 3-3 St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies. The Tommies currently sit fourth in the conference and most recently defeated USTA 3-0 on Sunday, Nov. 19. Holland and STU have not played each other yet this season.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball Hurricanes began this week’s action with a rare Thursday night game against the 0-4 Crandall University Chargers at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

To say the game was an absolute thriller in front of the Hurricanes fans is a massive understatement.

The ‘Canes dominated from the start with a 25-13 first set win, but the Chargers rallied back with a 25-23 second set win. The game returned to ‘Canes territory in the third set as they won 25-18. The fourth set was nothing short of brilliant as the Chargers fired everything at the ‘Canes to force a fifth set, but it wouldn’t be enough as Holland hung on for a wild 25-22 set win and a 3-1 match win.

Izumo Ueda led the ‘Canes with 13 kills, while Dominik Pineau registered 12 and Carson Gray, 10.  Marcus Lapointe led the way with 10 digs.

Holland improved to 3-2 with the win and are now on a three-game winning streak. Crandall remains winless at 0-5.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes will have all the confidence and momentum in the world heading into this Saturday after an impressive 83-39 win against Crandall in Moncton, N.B. last Saturday.

On Nov. 25, the ‘Canes will welcome the 5-1 Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics to the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown at 2:30 p.m. MSVU enters the match tied with University of King’s College (UKC) for first place in the conference at 10 points. The ‘Canes are 3-3 and tied for third in the conference with Mount Allison.

The ‘Canes first played the Mystics on Saturday, Nov. 11 in Halifax, N.S. and lost 105-79.

Amy Plaggenhoef, Lauren Armstrong, and Alexa Rancourt will be relied on to continue the ‘Canes success, as Plaggenhoef is third in the conference in points per game at 16.2, and Armstrong and Rancourt lead the conference in rebounds per game at 11.0 and 9.7. Plaggenhoef and Rancourt combined for a total of 38 points in the recent win against Crandall.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball Hurricanes will hope to go into resurgence mode this Saturday after a rough 84-65 loss against Crandall in Moncton, N.B. last Saturday.

This Saturday, the ‘Canes will welcome the undefeated MSVU Mystics to the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown at 4:30 p.m. MSVU enters the match at 6-0 and lead the ACAA. The ‘Canes are 3-3 and tied for third in the conference with Crandall.

The ‘Canes first played the Mystics on Saturday, Nov. 11 in Halifax, N.S. and lost 109-71.

Bryce Corless and Diangelo Woodside will continue to be relied on to give the ‘Canes fans a victorious show, as Corless is second in the conference in points per game at 20.8 and Woodside is third in the conference in field goal per centage at 60.7. Corless had 15 points in Holland’s loss last Saturday.
