St. John’s guard joins basketball Hurricanes this fall

The women’s basketball Hurricanes are keeping busy this off-season with another addition to their roster, recently adding Kristen Gosse, a guard out of St. John’s, Newfoundland. Gosse will be enrolled in the Sport & Leisure Management program this fall at Holland College.

“I chose to enroll at Holland College because my sister played with the women’s soccer team and spoke very highly of her time with the Hurricanes. I chose Holland College as I work towards reaching my goals academically as well as athletically.”

Gosse has competed as a member of Newfoundland provincial teams in recent years as well as with the St. Kevin’s Mavericks Senior High School team and the Holy Heart of Mary High School Highlanders. Gosse hopes that her experience and skills will help create a successful transition to the collegiate level.

“I’m confident in not only myself but my teammates as well. My shooting is consistent, I always hit the boards hard, and I have a rounded basketball IQ.”

Head coach Jared Cheverie welcomes Gosse to the roster.

“Kristen is another key addition to our youth movement.  She is a strong shooter with a high IQ and great vision on the floor.  Her length will be valuable on the defensive side of the ball and we are looking forward to watching her game develop into a skilled guard in the ACAA.”

In 2017, Gosse represented her home province at the Canada Games. In 2019, she was named the female Athlete of the Year at St. Kevin’s Senior High; she will look to contribute to the success of the Hurricanes this fall.

“I will bring positive energy, determination, and hard work to help the Hurricanes become championship contenders.”

Named the Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year in her senior year, Gosse hopes to help contribute to a team that Hurricanes fans can get behind and follow into the post-season.

“Fans can expect a new level of intensity from the team, as well as a new found drive for success.”

The women’s basketball Hurricanes kick off their 2019-20 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season on Saturday, November 2 when they visit the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  The team will hold their home opener on Saturday, November 9 when they host the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves at 1 pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
