Coaching change for Hurricanes ahead of upcoming season

The Holland Hurricanes women’s basketball team will have a new head coach for the 2019-2020 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) season.  Chris Connolly will assume control of the program after Jared Cheverie stepped down from the role last week for personal reasons.

Connolly, from Charlottetown, PEI, previously was an assistant coach with the women’s Hurricanes for two seasons (2013-2015) when the team claimed back-to-back conference championships and attended the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national championships (winning a bronze medal in 2015).  Previous to his stint with the women’s program, he served as an assistant coach with the men’s team from 2009 through 2013.

“I’m excited to get going and continue the tradition of winning basketball here with the Hurricanes women’s basketball program.  I am looking forward to getting back in the gym and getting to work,” shared Connolly.

Connolly has worked as a mentor in the Transitions Program at Holland College since 2009.

Albert Roche, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College, welcomes Chris back to the women’s basketball program, while thanking Jared Cheverie for his commitment to the Hurricanes the last two seasons.

“We immensely appreciate the dedication and passion Jared has provided to our program over his two years with us.  We are extremely fortunate to have Chris Connolly join the Hurricanes coaching staff once again.  Chris has had success with our women’s team on the national stage and this experience bodes well as we prepare for the season ahead.  While a change at this time presents some challenges, our recruits, returning players and coaches have all handled the transition well.”

The Hurricanes will begin their 2019-2020 ACAA regular season on November 2 in Halifax, NS when they visit the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics.  The team will play their home opener on Saturday, November 9 at 2pm when they host the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown.

Hurricanes Basketball Booster Club memberships are now on sale.  For $100, fans will receive a season pass to all men’s and women’s Hurricanes basketball home games in 2019-20, a limited-edition Hurricanes toque, plus a personalized name badge.  For more information, or to sign-up, email hollandhurricanes@hollandcollege.com or call (902) 894-6870.
