Butler, from Charlottetown, PEI, had previously served as an assistant coach with the team last season.
“I can’t wait to get in the gym with all our returning players and new recruits,” shared Butler. “We will have a good mix of youthful energy and veteran experience. I feel there are few that are as familiar with this program and conference as me, and I hope to pass on the knowledge I’ve gathered from my coaching and playing career to our student-athletes this season.”
Prior to joining the coaching staff, Butler was a member of the Hurricanes from 2014 to 2019 where he captained the ‘Canes to two Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) conference titles, and three trips to Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships, including hosting the event in Charlottetown in 2015.
“Brett has been with our program for many years and his passion for the sport and his pride in the Hurricanes has always been evident,” shared Albert Roche, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College. “His move to head coach represents a logical progression given his knowledge of what it takes to succeed at a collegiate level as a player and his dedication to quickly developing as a coach. I look forward to working with Brett as he takes on this new challenge.”
In 2021-22, the Hurricanes finished with a regular season record of 2-8, before falling in the ACAA semi-final match to the eventual conference champions from the St. Thomas University (STU).
A strong incoming recruiting class has brought optimism for the 2022-23 season as the ‘Canes gear up for another exciting season of ACAA volleyball. The team will open their 2022-23 season on Saturday, October 29 at home versus the STU Tommies at 5pm at the Holland College McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE).
