Busy month ahead for Hurricanes

The 2019 season may be five months away, but the Holland Hurricanes football team is preparing for a busy April with several events set to take place.

The teams annual Spring Identification Camp will begin on Friday, April 12 with evening classroom sessions at the Holland College Prince of Wales campus in Charlottetown.

The team will hit the field on Saturday from 10am-12pm and again from 3-5pm.  On-field sessions continue on Sunday, April 14 from 10-12pm; all on-field sessions will take place at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.

“We’re excited to get a look at some of our recruits for the upcoming season,” shared head coach, Steve Letner.  “It’s important to our program to get an early look at potential roster players for next season.”

The Spring Identification Camp is open to all interested players ages 16-24 looking to try out for the Hurricanes in front of the coaching staff, alongside current roster players and recruits.  To register for the camp, or for more information, email sletner@hollandcollege.com.

Thursday, April 25 marks the start of the first-ever Hurricanes Spring Football Academy, open to football players wanting to improve their skills at various levels under the guidance of the Hurricanes coaching staff and players, including head coach Letner.

The “Intro to Football” group, open to boys and girls 6-12 years old (5:30-6:45pm), will focus on fundamental skills and techniques needed to excel in the sport.  Participants will learn to run, catch, throw and properly kick a football through activities, games and skill training.

The “Advanced” group, open to boys and girls 13-18 years old (7:00-8:15pm), is designed to improve football skills through a variety of drills that players can later do on their own to continue their development.

All academy sessions take place at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.  The program costs $60 per player and the six-sessions take place on Thursdays and Fridays on April 25, 26, May 2, 3, 9 and 10.

Limited spots are available and registration is open now online at hollandhurricanes.com, by emailing canescamp@hollandcollege.com or by calling (902) 566-9686.

On Sunday, April 28 the ‘Canes will host the first-ever Hurricanes Football Combine at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.

Open to players ages 15-24, the Hurricanes Football Combine will test and showcase aspiring football players through a variety of physical and mental tests and drills in a similar format to that of the NFL and CFL Combines.

“We’re looking forward to connecting with potential future Hurricanes players at our first-ever combine,” said coach Letner.  “Whether these players are looking to play at the collegiate level this season, or they are a few years away, this is a great opportunity to showcase themselves to collegiate coaches.”

The Hurricanes are encouraging female football players to register for both their Spring Academy and Combine.

“As female football rapidly develops here in Atlantic Canada, we want to do our part, where we can, to support this movement,” shared Letner.  “We’re excited to have our coaching staff work with these female athletes at our academies and Combine in hopes of assisting in the development and growth of female football on PEI.”

The Hurricanes Football Combine on April 28 is open to female players over the age of 15 with no age limit.

The Hurricanes Football Combine is free for all interested players; registration is open now and closes on Friday, April 19 at 5pm.  To register, email dccudmore@hollandcollege.com.
