Baseball 'Canes set to begin ACBA regular season on road

The Holland Hurricanes baseball team returns to the diamond this weekend to kick off their 2019 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) regular season. The team was originally scheduled to begin their season last weekend, with two road games followed by two home games, until they were rescheduled due to Hurricane Dorian.

This weekend, the team travels to Halifax, Nova Scotia on Saturday to take on the Dalhousie University Tigers before heading to Fredericton, New Brunswick on Sunday to take on the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Reds.

Both weekend matchups are double-headers with the first pitch for game one set for 1:00pm and game two beginning at approximately 3:30pm.

Head coach, Andrew MacNevin, is pleased with the way things have taken shape following training camp.

“Our team has a number of versatile players which provides added depth at our most important positions in the field.  Our group of players are very eager to compete and I like our gamesmanship thus far.  It’s going to be a matter of us getting off to a good start and who gets hot come championship time in October.  The new ACBA structure is going to be fun for all competing teams and we look forward to challenging for a conference banner this season.”

The Hurricanes roster features eight players who were with the team last year that went 10-0 during the regular season. The roster also features a strong Island contingent with 14 players from the PEI.

Second-year player, Tyler Johnson (Cardigan, PEI) looks forward to getting back on the field.

“I think we have a great mix of returning players and new guys on our roster. It's definitely a group that will do everything they can to win ball games.”

The Hurricanes will host their home opener on Sunday, September 22 when they host the St. Francis Xavier (STFX) X-men at 1 and 3:30pm at Memorial Field at Victoria Park in Charlottetown.

‘Canes first-year middle infielder, Jake MacLaren (Morell, PEI), sees great potential in the Hurricanes lineup for 2019.

“I’m very excited to get the season started with a great group of guys.  I feel like we have a lot of potential this year and can do great things on the field.”
