'Canes set to challenge at bball Nats; vball earn win

It’s been a busy few weeks for the Holland Hurricanes at Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships; the women’s volleyball ‘Canes concluded play at their national championship in Nanaimo, British Columbia on Friday, while the men’s basketball ‘Canes are set to travel to Calgary, Alberta on Tuesday.

 

The volleyball ‘Canes concluded the 2023 national championship in seventh after defeating Saint-Boniface in the placement game on Friday in four-sets.

The ‘Canes tournament included a loss on Wednesday in straight-sets to Camosun in the quarterfinals, before falling to Edouard-Montpetit in the bronze medal quarterfinals on Thursday in straight-sets.

Lakeland, from Vermilion, Alberta, ultimately won the national championship, with Camosun finishing in second.  The Humber College Hawks finished the championship with the bronze medal.

The ‘Canes, the 2023 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) champions, finished the regular season at 13-5, went undefeated in their three conference playoff matches, before going 1-2 at nationals.

The men’s basketball Hurricanes begin their day of travel on Tuesday for Calgary, Alberta, host site of the 2023 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship.

The ‘Canes, the 2023 ACAA Champions, will begin their tournament versus the hosts, the Southern Alberta Institiute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans on Thursday at 11pm Atlantic Time.  SAIT finished the season at the conference level by winning the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) title.

In total there are eight teams competing at the national championship in Calgary.  Joining the Hurricanes and the Trojans are the St. Mary’s Lightning (Calgary, Alberta), St. Clair Saints (Windsor, Ontario), Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners (Nanaimo, British Columbia), Dawson Blues (Westmount, Quebec), Capilano Blues (North Vancouver, British Columbia), and the George Brown Huskies (Toronto, Ontario).
