Basketball ‘Canes set for road matchups versus Mounties

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams are in Sackville, New Brunswick on Saturday for a pair of Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season games versus the Mount Allison University Mounties.

The women will take the court at 1pm with the men’s game following at 3pm. This is the first time the two programs have met this season.

After two weekends of play, the women’s Hurricanes sit at 1-1 on the season while the Mounties are 0-3.

The ‘Canes dropped their season opener to the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on November 2 before earning the victory over the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves in their home opener on November 9.

The Mounties have had a challenging start to their regular season, dropping games to the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies, Seawolves and University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils.

Statistically, the Hurricanes have relied on the offense of Ashley Plaggenhoef to lead the team early this season; she’s averaged 17.5 points per game.

The men’s Hurricanes have opened the regular season with back-to-back wins over the Mystics and Seawolves, while the Mounties are 1-2 after losses to the Tommies and Seawolves, and a victory over the Blue Devils.

Offensively, Jordan Holness has led the ‘Canes through the opening two games this season, averaging 23.5 points per game.

The ‘Canes men were positioned at number three in last week’s Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) national men’s basketball rankings; one of two ACAA teams in the top 15.
