AOTW | Zayley Murphy Riley O'Keefe named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Volleyball players, Zayley Murphy and Riley O’Keefe have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 13.

Murphy, in her first season with the Hurricanes, is a 5’10” setter from Conception Bay South, Newfoundland.

On Saturday, Murphy recorded four kills, two service aces, four digs and a match-high 26 assists to lead the ‘Canes to a straight-sets sweep over the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons. This was followed by a kill, two service aces, a dig and 22 assists on Sunday in another straight-sets victory by Holland College over the Dragons.

With injuries to the Hurricanes lineup, Murphy moved from her outside position to setter to lead the ‘Canes to back-to-back wins.

The Hurricanes now sit at 9-3 on the season and in second place in the ACAA standings. They return to action this weekend when they host the STU Tommies on Saturday at 2pm before welcoming the MSVU Mystics to the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement on Sunday at 12pm.

O’Keefe, a 6’2”, first-year middle from St. John’s, Newfoundland, helped guide the ‘Canes in a weekend series versus the UNBSJ Seawolves in Saint John, New Brunswick.

On Saturday, O’Keefe would record four kills and two service aces in a straight-sets win over the Seawolves. He would record 12 kills, two service aces and three digs in Sunday’s five-set loss.

The Hurricanes now sit at 3-6 on the season and in third place in the ACAA. They return to action on Sunday when they visit the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons at 3pm in Church Point, Nova Scotia. Their next home game takes place on Sunday, January 27 at 3pm when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
