Gerbig and Nwaogazi-Awuja named Hurricanes AOTW

Volleyball player, Sam Gerbig, and cross-country runner, Benjamin Nwaogazi-Awuja, have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 3.

Gerbig, in her fourth-year of eligibility, led the Hurricanes to back-to-back straight sets victories on the road to open up the 2019-20 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season.

In Saturday’s win, Gerbig contributed with four kills, four service aces and a dig, before adding six kills, six service aces and a dig in Sunday’s victory; both games took place in Church Point, Nova Scotia versus the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons.

From Charlottetown, PEI, Gerbig plays the left side position and is currently studying in the Business Administration program at Holland College. 

Nwaogazi-Awuja, in his second year with the ‘Canes, finished in third at Saturday’s ACAA Cross-Country Running Championship hosted by the Hurricanes at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park in Brookvale, PEI.  The Hurricanes also won the men’s team championship for the first time in the programs history.

From Imo State, Nigeria, Nwaogazi-Awuja currently studies in the Electronics Engineering Technology program at Holland College.

A dual-athlete, Nwaogazi-Awuja is also a full back for the men’s soccer Hurricanes, currently competing at the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Men’s Soccer Championships in Oshawa, Ontario.
