Job Description

The student Wildfire Crew Members will be responsible for suppressing and extinguishing wildfires on PEI as well as other provinces and territories across Canada as part of the provincial export team. This work includes operating wildfire pumps and using hoses, nozzles, hand tools, chainsaws, and brush saws and can take place in a variety of conditions, predominantly outside. This work can also involve working around various machinery such as tracked vehicles, ATVs, helicopters and air tankers. They would also assist with the provincial FireSmart program, provincial silviculture crews and other maintenance work needed by the department. Candidates will need to successfully complete a national standard fitness test before being granted an interview.

Prescreening fitness testing will be held at 183 Upton Road, Charlottetown, February 14th, 17th. Interviews will be held remotely on February 25th.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Wildland fire suppression and extinguishment;
  • Pump operation;
  • Wildfire hose and nozzle operation;
  • Hand tools;
  • Ability to work in and around aircraft;
  • Wildland fire equipment maintenance and cleaning;
  • Assisting wildland fire suppression in other provinces upon request;
  • Assisting the Provincial FireSmart program;
  • Assisting Provincial silviculture crews;
  • Operating chainsaws and brush saws;
  • Assisting in data collection and field work;
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in post-secondary institution in 2026
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Physically fit (must pass national standard wildfire fitness test). The national standard wildfire fitness test must be completed before an interview can be granted, this test must also be completed upon commencement in May.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and GIS mapping software
  • Successful completion of Department offered helicopter hover entry and exit training

Other Qualifications:

  • Chainsaw safety and training certification
  • First Aid/CPR ATV Operator certification
