Preparing for Your SOPA Music Audition

graphic reads Auditions above a cutout image of a student vocalist singing into a microphoneIf you’ve applied to the School of Performing Arts (SOPA) Music Performance Program, the next step is completing your audition.

Auditions are required for students entering the program and give you the opportunity to demonstrate your musical skills, experience, and potential. Once your application has been confirmed, you’ll be able to schedule your in-person audition.

What to Expect

Before auditioning, you’ll need to declare your primary instrument of study. This is the instrument you’ll perform on during your audition and the one you’ll focus on in ensembles and private lessons if accepted.

Your audition will be evaluated based on your overall potential for success. Rather than focusing on just one element, instructors will consider a combination of performance ability, musicianship, and musical understanding.

You may also complete reading and listening exercises designed to help instructors assess your current level and potential for growth. For a full breakdown of audition requirements and preparation tips, visit the SOPA webpage.

Upcoming Audition Days

This spring, auditions will take place on March 28 and May 1, both from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the SOPA Garage building, where many rehearsals, performances, and program activities happen throughout the year. These dates give you the chance to complete your audition and experience the SOPA space.

Take the Next Step

Your audition is the next big step toward joining the SOPA Music Performance Program. Whether you come on a scheduled audition day or set up your own time, this is your chance to showcase your skills, show your passion, and experience what SOPA has to offer. Get ready, bring your best, and step into the spotlight!
