WVBALL | Hurricanes and Mystics ready for pair of key ACAA matchups this weekend at CCE

November 24, 2017

It’s a battle of the only two undefeated women’s volleyball teams in the ACAA; the Holland Hurricanes versus the MSVU Mystics in a pair of games this weekend at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown.

Saturday’s match will take place at 6pm while Sunday’s will begin at 12pm.

The ‘Canes enter the weekend at 3-0 after victories over the Mount Allison Mounties, Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons and Dal AC Rams this season; they enter the weekend in second place.

“We’ve been practicing hard all week to get ready for this game. It is a battle for first place in the conference so it’s important for confidence and momentum leading into next semester,” shared second year left side Megan LeBlanc.

The first place MSVU Mystics enter Saturday’s match with a 6-0 record; they’ve defeated Mount Allison, Dal AC, St. Thomas, UKC, UNBSJ and the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons this season.

This is the first time these two teams have met since February’s ACAA Championship game which saw the Mystics win a five-set thriller.

“We’ve had a slow start to the season having only played three teams who are currently at the bottom of the ACAA standings,” shared head coach Lori-Beth Dwyer.  “We’ve been working hard in practice to increase the tempo and intensity of our play to be prepared for what will likely be a good battle between two strong teams.”

Individual statistical leaders for the Hurricanes this season have been LeBlanc and Brittany States (20 kills each), Philicia Johnson (nine service aces) and Dana Trainor (23 digs).

This weekend’s games are the final two home games for the Hurricanes before the holiday break.

After this weekend’s matches the Hurricanes have just one remaining game in 2017, taking place on December 2 versus UNBSJ in Saint John, NB.
