GOLF | Leidenius picks up two wins; men finish runners-up on back-to-back days

It was two beautiful days of competitive golf in Fredericton this weekend when the Holland Hurricanes, University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds and St. Thomas Tommies came together to kick off the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association season.  The two, one-day events would be held at the Mactaquac Golf Course and Kingswood Park Golf Course.

On Saturday, the Hurricanes men’s team of Alex Taylor (72), Jake Ward (76), Jason Poley (76), Guillaume Côté-Généreux (79) and Spencer Compton (85) represented the Holland College team at Mactaquac compiling a score of 303.  UNB would pick up the win with a team score of 296.

Alex Taylor was the top ‘Canes individual performer finishing in second place while Jake Ward, Jason Poley and Hurricanes individual entry Josh Gracie finished in eighth place with scores of 76.

Daria Leidenius would win the women’s individual competition by six shots to claim her first ACAA event of the season.

On Sunday the beautiful weather continued in Fredericton as the ACAA travelled to Kingswood Park Golf Course for the second event of the season.

UNB would once again post the lowest score with a blistering 281 while the Hurricanes finished second at 292 with scores from Alex Taylor (69), Jake Ward (71), Jason Poley (71), Guillaume Côté-Généreux (81) and Josh Gracie (82).

Taylor would tie for the tournament win while Ward, Poley (T4) and Hurricanes individual entry, Travis Gray (73, 7th) would finish in the top ten.

Daria Leidenius would shoot a 79 on the day to claim her second ACAA victory of the season.

The Hurricanes will now turn their attention towards hosting the ACAA Championships this weekend (September 29-October 1) at the Links at Crowbush Cove.

The Hurricanes men have won every ACAA championship since 2006 while the women have won in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2012 and 2016.
