BBALL | Hurricanes split games against Crandall in Moncton

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams split their games on Sunday against the Crandall Chargers in Moncton, NB, with the women picking up a 107-82 win while the men lost 108-103.

In the women’s game, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 38-22 lead after the first quarter and would lead 69-41 at the half. The ‘Canes would coast in the second half to a 25 point win.

Breauna Rivoli-Johnson led the way with a game high 31 points. That total is good for the third most points scored in a game by a ‘Canes women’s player since the 2010-11 season. Rivoli-Johnson also contributed six rebounds, three steals, and one block.

Lexi MacInnis added 20 points and seven rebounds in the win while Tyleigha Nelson added 15 points and nine rebounds.

Jayla Verney and Alyssa Canning also reached double digits with ten points each in the win.

The ‘Canes move to 3-2 on the season and are in third place in the ACAA while the Chargers are tied for sixth at 0-4.

In the men’s game the ‘Canes jumped out to a 31-24 lead after one quarter but would see it disappear in the second as the teams would go into the break tied at 53-53. The ‘Canes would take a two-point lead after three and would stretch it out to seven points but couldn’t hang for the victory, eventually losing by five.

Marcus Dawkins had 22 points to lead the way for the ‘Canes with Jace Colley adding 21. Kyle Lefave had 19 points and Chase Bowden recorded another double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds.

Dawkins also chipped in a team-high four assists and five steals for the ‘Canes in the loss.

The loss is the first of the season for the ‘Canes as they fall to 5-1 and are in second place while the Chargers are 4-1 and are in a tie for third.

The men’s and women’s ‘Canes will end their first semester with a trip to Fredericton to take on the STU Tommies on Sunday, December 3; their next home games take place on Saturday, January 20 at the Holland College CCE versus the UKC Blue Devils.
