The Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball team completed the comeback versus the Mount Allison University Mounties on Saturday, earning the five-set victory at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) in Charlottetown, PEI. They followed this up the next day in Saint John, New Brunswick, earning a straight-sets victory over the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action.
On Saturday versus the Mounties, the ‘Canes fell behind early with set losses of 25-27 and 25-16; they completed the comeback in five-sets with wins of 25-12, 25-17 and 15-8.
Abby Hyndman led the attack for the ‘Canes with 15 kills with Sam Gerbig right behind her with 14; Zayley Murphy added 11 kills in the win.
Marissa Macaulay had a match-high 34 assists along with two aces and nine digs while Murphy and Dana Trainor had 13 digs each to lead the defense.
The ‘Canes recorded 26 service aces in the match led by Murphy with eight, Gerbig with seven, and Barenaba with five.
Things went much smoother for the ‘Canes on Sunday in Saint John, NB, as they defeated the UNBSJ Seawolves by set scores were 25-18, 25-20 and 25-20.
Gerbig was the only player on either team to reach double digits in kills with 11; Hyndman added seven with Amanda de Carvalho Brito adding five in the win.
Macaulay had a match-high 26 assists in the win while Trainor and Murphy had 14 and 12 digs respectively to lead the defensive effort.
Gerbig led the way from the service line with five aces with Hyndman, Barenaba, and Murphy all chipping in with two.
The ‘Canes are now 13-0 on the season and continue to lead the conference standings. The Mounties sit in second and drop to 11-3 while the Seawolves are in seventh at 2-10.
The ‘Canes return to the court next Saturday, February 8 when the hit the road to take on the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams in Truro, Nova Scotia; their next home game is on Saturday, February 15 when they host the Université de Sainte-Anne (USA) Dragons at 4pm at the Holland College CCE.
