Volleyball ‘Canes women defeat Rams, men split with STU

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams were in action on the road this weekend in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season play.  The ‘Canes women defeated the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams in straight sets on Saturday in Truro, Nova Scotia while the men were in Fredericton, New Brunswick taking on the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies.  In Saturday’s match the Tommies walked away victorious while the Hurricanes claimed the win on Sunday; both matches ended in four sets.

In Saturday’s women’s game, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-17.

Abby Hyndman led the offense for the ‘Canes with seven kills with Sam Gerbig adding six and Kateia Barenaba recording five. Marissa Macaulay dished out a match-high 17 assists along with two aces and one block.

Dana Trainor had ten digs to lead a balanced defensive effort for Holland College with Macaulay adding seven, Zayley Murphy six, and Hyndman and Gerbig with five each.

Gerbig and Calandra Bychyk both added two aces in the win.

The ‘Canes keep their perfect season alive as they move to 14-0 and continue to lead the ACAA standings. The Rams fall to 6-9 with the loss and sit in sixth place.

The women’s Hurricanes return to action next Saturday, February 15 when they host the Université de Sainte-Anne (USA) Dragons in their final home game of the season at 4pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) in Charlottetown, PEI.

In Saturday’s men’s game, the ‘Canes lost by set scores of 30-28, 20-25, 25-23 and 29-27.

Simon Archibald and Gordon Veitch both had 17 kills to lead the offense for the ‘Canes with Brandon Hastings dishing out 40 assists in the loss.

Veitch and Alex Joudrey each had 17 digs to lead the defensive effort with Archibald adding 14.

On Sunday, the men were victorious by set scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-18 and 25-17.

Archibald and Veitch once again led the ‘Canes offense with 12 and 11 kills respectively while Hastings had another strong game at setter with 36 assists in the win.

Joudrey had 16 digs to lead the defensive effort with Hastings adding nine and Veitch chipping in with eight.

The ‘Canes move to 4-8 on the season and sit in fourth place in the ACAA standings, just two points back of both the Dragons (5-7) and University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves (5-8). The Tommies continue to lead the ACAA standings at 11-2.

The Hurricanes will finish their regular season with three games at home starting next Saturday, February 15 at 6pm when the host the USA Dragons at the Holland College CCE. They will square off again on Sunday, February 16 at 11am before finishing their regular season by hosting the STU Tommies at 5:30pm on February 22.
