The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams are set to take on the best programs from across Canada at the 2020 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships starting this Thursday; the women’s event takes place in Quebec City, hosted by Cégep Garneau, while the men’s championship is being hosted by the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Quarter-final action begins at 1pm on Thursday when the men’s Hurricanes take on the champions from the Ontario Collegiate Athletic Association (OCAA), the Humber College Hawks, while the women’s Hurricanes take the court at 9pm Atlantic versus the Briercrest College Clippers, the champions from the Alberta Collegiate Athletic Conference (ACAC).

The men’s team from Humber College defeated the Durham College Lords in three sets to capture the OCAA Championship title in February after an 18-0 regular season and first-place finish in the OCAA West Division. Humber last won the national championship in 2012.

The men’s Hurricanes, the 2020 runners-up in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA), dropped the conference championship match to the host-STU Tommies earlier this spring in straight-sets.  The ‘Canes finished the regular season as the second-seed after a 7-8 record which included wins in five of their last six games.

A win on Thursday advances you to the semi-finals on Friday at 6pm versus the winner of the Lethbridge/Sherbrooke match, while a loss has you playing the loser at 1pm.

The Briercrest College Clippers women’s team represents the ACAC after defeating the Red Deer College (RDC) Queens in a five-set marathon in the ACAC Championship final last month. The Clippers finished atop the ACAC South Division standings with an impressive 22-2 record during the regular season.

The women’s Hurricanes, who captured their first ever ACAA Championship crown in February by defeating the host Mount Allison University Mounties in four-sets, enter the championship led by ACAA Player of the Year, Marissa Macaulay.

The Hurricanes went a perfect 18-0 to finish first overall in the ACAA during the regular season, only dropping six sets all season.

A win on Thursday moves you to the semi-finals on Friday at 9pm Atlantic versus the winner of the Camosun/Garneau quarter-final match; a loss has you playing the loser at 4pm Atlantic.

The women’s ‘Canes will also be represented in the 2021 version of this event after being named the hosts by the CCAA earlier this winter.
