Volleyball Hurricanes set to finish ACAA regular season

The Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) playoffs are just around the corner, but first the Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams will finish their 2019-2020 regular seasons this weekend.

The women’s Hurricanes will spend the weekend in Halifax, Nova Scotia, first taking on the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Saturday at 2pm before visiting the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils on Sunday at 12pm.

The ‘Canes enter the weekend at 16-0 and lead the ACAA standings, having clinched the number one seed entering the ACAA Championships, February 28-March 1 in Sackville, New Brunswick; they’ll receive a bye to the semi-finals where they will face the lowest advancing seed from the quarter-finals.

The Mystics enter the weekend at 10-6 this season, sitting in fourth place.  The ‘Canes defeated MSVU on December 1 in straight-sets in Charlottetown, PEI in their only previous meeting this season.

On Sunday the ‘Canes will take on the fifth place, 9-7, UKC Blue Devils. The Hurricanes also defeated UKC earlier this season in straight-sets, a November 24 match in Halifax.

The men’s Hurricanes will finish their regular season on home-court on Saturday when they host the conference leading, St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies (12-2) at 5:30pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) in Charlottetown.

The ‘Canes, currently in second place in the ACAA at 6-8, are guaranteed to play in the two-versus-three semi-final game next Saturday at the ACAA Championships in Halifax, however, their opponent is yet to be determined.

The University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves will challenge the Université de Sainte-Anne (USA) Dragons on Saturday in Saint John, NB in a match that will shape the ACAA men’s volleyball playoff picture.

Here are the scenarios that could playoff depending on Saturday’s ACAA men’s volleyball results:

  • Hurricanes defeat the Tommies, UNBSJ defeats USA: Hurricanes will finish in second place, will face the Seawolves (#3) in ACAA semi-finals.

  • Hurricanes defeat the Tommies, USA defeats UNBSJ: Hurricanes will finish in second place, will face the Dragons (#3) in ACAA semi-finals

  • Hurricanes lose to Tommies, UNBSJ defeats USA: Hurricanes will finish in second place, will face the Seawolves (#3) in ACAA semi-finals.

  • Hurricanes lose to Tommies, USA defeats UNBSJ: Hurricanes will finish in third place, will face the Dragons (#2) in ACAA semi-finals.

The ‘Canes will look to secure the second seed entering the playoffs with a victory on Saturday in front of their home fans.  The ‘Canes have earned a victory (February 9 in four-sets) versus the Tommies, while dropping their first three meetings this season.
