The Canadian eMotorsports Series travelled to the virtual-Atlanta Motor Speedway on Tuesday night for their third stop in the 2020 season, the Darcy Allan PR 250.
After last weeks race at Auto Club Speedway, which included only four cautions over the 200-mile race, Tuesday night at Atlanta Motor Speedway was quite the opposite.
Shane Cannon, of Cambridge, Ontario, outlasted all others in a caution-filled race as he took his number 88 Chevrolet Camaro to victory lane for his first win of the season. It was announced earlier this week that Cannon would be joining the newly formed NBR Motorsports.
Cannon’s teammate, Scott Bailey, of Allendale, Michigan, completed the storybook debut for NBR Motorsports on Tuesday as he finished in the runner-up position.
With the victory, for Cannon joins Jacob Nelson and Waylon Brown as the three drivers currently locked into the playoffs. A total of 16 drivers will participate in the playoffs this fall.
It’s been an incredible start for Chevrolet to kick off the 2020 season, as they’ve taken the victory in all three regular-season races so far.
Completing the top five on Tuesday night was Trent Neilson of Fort Wayne, Indiana, in his number 55, Neilson Photography and Design, Ford Mustang finishing third, Daniel Cudmore of Stanchel, PEI, in his number 2, Fix Auto Charlottetown/D. Alex MacDonald Ford Mustang for Hurricanes eMotorsports finishing fourth, and Jacob Nelson of Clarksville, Tennessee, in his number 9, Chevrolet Camaro finishing fifth.
The fourth stop in the series takes place on Tuesday, June 16 at the Homestead-Miami Speedway, the Sports Centre Physiotherapy 200.
Darcy Allan PR 250 race recap
Mike Marini (Thunder Bay, Ontario, 42 True North Racin Toyota) opened up the race as the pole-sitter for the second straight week with Chad Hyder (Dayton, Ohio, 21 Youtube.com/DHammiam Buckeye Emotorsports Ford) on the outside of row one.
It was proven early in the race that the inside line would be the preferred path for the field as cars on the outside would continue to be shuffled back in the pack.
Trevor Kinsey (Midland, Michigan, 6 Ford) took over the lead on lap two, prior to the first caution of the race with Ryan Gibson (Morgantown, West Virginia, 23 Chevrolet) moving to the front on lap 10, until a caution on lap 18 set up the first series of pit stops.
Hyder elected not to pit during the caution, opting to improve track position as he led the field on the restart on lap 21, but would pit just four laps later under caution.
As the field continued to reshuffle through the first series of pit stops, Gibson found his way to the front of the pack on lap 25, where he would remain through a series of cautions until Jose Mercado (Kissimmee, Florida, 41 Ford) became the leader of the race on lap 45.
After a series of full field pit stops on lap 64, Waylon Brown (Grande Prairie, Alberta, 67 Chevrolet) took the lead on the restart and would remain in front until lap 94, when Corbin MacAulay (Charlottetown, PEI, 17 Fix Auto Charlottetown/D. Alex MacDonald Hurricanes eMotorsports Ford) took the lead during a pit cycle under caution.
Into lap 107, Mike Marini would return to the front of the field before being overtaken by Brown on lap 109, with Gibson moving to the front on lap 113.
Marini, Kevin Fenech (Toronto, Ontario, 81 Primary Engines Inc. Chevrolet), MacAulay and Mercado would exchange leads over the course of the final series of pit stops
With Mercado in the lead in the final 15 laps of the race, the NBR Motorsports drivers of Cannon and Bailey hooked up in second and third place, pushing themselves towards the front of the pack before taking the lead when Mercado retired from the race with a malfunction with ten laps to go.
With the race going into overtime, Cannon would remain up front, with his teammate, Bailey, in his rear view mirror as the race came to a close.
There were a total of 34 cautions in the race.
Here are the official results from the Darcy Allan PR 250 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
