Mike Marini (Thunder Bay, ON) finally pulled his True North Racin’ Toyota Camry into victory lane on Tuesday night after a regular season where a win has eluded him; he was victorious at the Canada 125 presented by Tim Horton’s at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
With the victory, Marini earns five important playoff points, plus moves from eighth to fourth in the points standings with just one regular season race remaining. Marini entered Tuesday’s race as the highest ranked driver in the standings without a win this season.
Rounding out the top five in the race was Corbin MacAulay in second, Chad Hyder in third, Lee Campbell in fourth and Darcy Ford in fifth.
Through fifteen races this season, Chevrolet and Ford have each won seven times, with this being the first win of the season for Toyota.
All race winners secure a position in the 16-driver post-season beginning September 15 at the Darlington Raceway.
The race winners that will be competing in the post-season include Marini, Ford, Jose Mercado, Ryan Gibson, Scott Bailey, Jacob Nelson and MacAulay.
Michael Robinson moves into the final playoff spot after a 12th place finish; he has a 23-point cushion on Jason Butler who sits in 17th.
The 16th, and final, regular season race of 2020 takes place on Tuesday, September 8, at the Cracked Device Co. 200 at Daytona International Speedway.
Canada 125 presented by Tim Horton’s recap
Chad Hyder and Jason Malucknik started on the front-row on Tuesday as the field managed to get away clean to begin the race; Maluchnik would take the early lead on lap one.
An entertaining start to the race saw the first set of green-flag pit stops between laps six and nine for the field; Marini would hold the lead at the first scheduled caution on lap 12.
A variety of pit strategies were utilized as the second portion of the race began, some having pitted under caution, while others remained on the track and elected not to stop. The four drivers that remained on track during the caution, Trevor Kinsey, Hyder, Daniel Cudmore and Michael Dimitroff, restarted the race at the front of the field.
Kinsey would open up a large lead as Maluchnik attempted to track him down for most of the run. As some of the field pitted during the second green-flag run of the race, Marini would eventually take over the lead as his strategy allowed him to run until the scheduled caution on lap 23, where he would pit.
Kinsey and Hyder once again led the field to the final green-flag of the race, a 15-lap shootout for the win.
Kinsey would jump out to the lead with Hyder, Marini, Maluchnik and Cudmore rounding out the top five after a wild restart that saw cars jostling for positions all over the track.
Disaster would strike for Kinsey who would suffer from a mechanical failure while in the lead, retiring from the race and handing over the lead to Marini with nine laps remaining.
Marini would manage to hold the lead for the final laps, securing the victory.
Here are the final results from the Canada 125 presented by Tim Horton’s at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
