Ryan Gibson drove his Chevrolet Camaro to victory lane on Tuesday night at the Michigan International Speedway in the Domino’s 200; it was his third victory of the 2020 Canadian eMotorsports Network NASCAR Series regular season.

Having started second, Gibson hung near the front of the field for the duration of the race, battling the likes of Darcy Ford, Mike Marini, Jose Mercado and others over the 100-lap event.

“I tried to get track position by pitting later than everyone else to have a better car late in the race,” shared Gibson.  “I tightened the car up on the final stop to help me later in the run while it seemed like everyone else had gotten a bit loose.” 

Gibson jumps back into second place in the regular season standings with his three victories in 2020; there are four races remaining before the start of the playoffs.

The victory increases Gibson’s playoff point total to fifteen.

Rounding out the top five on Tuesday was Ford in second, Marini in third, Mercado in fourth and Kevin Daigle in fifth.

So far this season, Chevrolet has earned wins in seven races, while Ford has produced the winners in the other five; Toyota continues to search for their first win of the season.

All race winners secure a position in the 16-driver post-season beginning September 15 at the Darlington Raceway.

The seven race winners so far in 2020 include Ford, Mercado, Gibson, Scott Bailey, Shane Cannon, Waylon Brown and Jacob Nelson; Brown has elected to withdraw from the series.

Dalton Simpson currently sits in the final playoff spot with an eleven-point cushion.

The 13^th race of the season takes place on Tuesday, August 18, a road-course race at Watkins Glen International for the Source for Sports 110 at the Glen.

Domino’s 200 race recap

Jose Mercado led the field to the green flag to begin the Domino’s 200 on Tuesday night as a lead pack of five (Jacob Nelson, Mike Marini, Darcy Ford and Bruce Webb) separated themselves from the rest of the field at the two-mile, Michigan International Speedway. 

Tandem drafting was critical for the duration of the race as was fresh-tires and pit strategy to those that hoped to run near the front of the field.  Nelson would move to the front of the pack on lap eight before Mercado retook the front position on lap nine. 

As we approached our first round of green flag pit stops, Ford would briefly hold the lead on lap 14 as the lead pack would exchange running out front over the early portion of the race.

The first scheduled caution on lap 29 saw Gibson edge Mercado at the line, with Nelson following close behind.

The second green flag run saw much of the same as Mercado led the leaders as a gap was created between the rest of the field.  Two-laps prior to the second scheduled caution, Gibson would take the lead from Mercado as we entered our fourth round of full field pit stops.

The final green flag run would see Marini, Gibson, Bailey, Mercado and Ford battle for the win in the final 38 laps, with Kevin Daigle eventually joining the pack.

As we made our way into the final ten laps, with Gibson leading, Marini, Ford and Mercado would race hard for the win.  With three to go, Ford and Marini would touch while battling attempting to pass Gibson, allowing Gibson to open up a small gap, enough to earn the victory.
