The Canadian eMotorsports Series travelled to the virtual-Auto Club Speedway on Tuesday night for the second stop in the 2020 regular season, the Cooke Insurance Group 200.
After a caution-filled race in the season opener at Daytona, Tuesday night was quite the opposite. With just four cautions over the 100 lap, 200-mile race on the two-mile D-shaped oval, the race was filled with long green flag runs and came down to pit-strategy in the end.
Waylon Brown, of Grande Prairie, Alberta, earned the victory in his number 67 Chevrolet Camaro, guaranteeing him a spot in the playoffs; he joins race one winner, Jacob Nelson, as the two drivers currently locked in for the post-season.
Chevrolet looks like they could be the car to beat early this season, claiming two straight victories to open up the season.
Mike Marini, the pole-sitter from Thunder Bay, Ontario, has been impressive, recording his second-straight runner-up finish on Tuesday night. His True North Racin, Toyota Camry sits in third in the point standings, with Trevor Kinsey and Kevin Fenech, rounding out the top five.
The series will now shift focus to race three, taking place on Tuesday, June 9, at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, the Darcy Allan PR 250.
Cooke Insurance Group 200 race recap
Mike Marini opened the race from the pole-position as the field quickly fanned out on the multiple-groove race track.
Marini, Darcy Ford (Harrington, PEI, 67 Suck It Up Septic, Atlantic Motorsports Ford) and Jayce Swint (Phenix City, Alabama, 38 Toyota) separated themselves from the pack early with Ford taking over the lead on lap seven before Marini retook the lead shortly after.
Chad Hyder (Dayton, Ohio, 21 Youtube.com/DHammiam, Buckeye Performance Emotorsports, Ford) joined the front pack shortly after and inserted himself into the battle as him and Swint exchanged leads prior to the first pit-stops under caution on lap 21.
Three more quick cautions on lap 27, 32 and 35 followed as Ford led the charge before Jose Mercado (Kissimmee, Florida, 41 Ford) took his first lead of the race on lap 38, leading until past the halfway point.
After the field cycled through green flag pit stops, Darcy Ford took over the lead with less than 40 laps remaining.
As the field ran the final green flag run of 65-laps, Darcy Ford held the lead but would be unable to make it to the end on fuel, pitting in the final laps to finish tenth.
Eventually, Waylon Brown would take the lead in the final 15 laps of the race and was able to drive to victory.
In total there were four cautions in the race.
