The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams return to the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement this weekend when they host the Crandall University Chargers on Friday and the Mount Allison University Mounties on Sunday.

Friday’s games versus Crandall take place at 5 and 7pm, with Sunday’s versus the Mounties beginning at 2 and 4pm (w/m).

On the women’s side, the ‘Canes enter the weekend with a 10-3 record and sit in a three-way tie for top spot in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) standings alongside the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics and St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies.

Friday’s opponents, the Chargers, are 0-14 and in seventh place in the standings while the Mounties are in fifth place with a 5-8 record.

This season the ‘Canes are 2-0 versus the Chargers, first winning on December 2 (77-53), then again on January 11 (80-60); both games were played in Moncton, NB.  The Hurricanes are also 2-0 versus the Mounties this season, earning wins on November 16 (75-54) and again on January 26 (60-57) in Sackville, NB.

As a team the ‘Canes sit first in the conference in rebounds per game (43.7), assists per game (17.2), and blocks per game (4.2) and second in points scored per game (74.4).

Individually, Aki Kobayashi leads the conference in scoring at 15 points per game while Kassandra Little and Sophie Atkinson sit first and second in rebounds per game at 11 and 9.6 respectively.

On the men’s side, the ‘Canes and Mounties are tied for top spot in the conference at 10-3 while the Chargers are in fifth at 5-9.

The ‘Canes are 2-0 against the Chargers this season, winning 81-70 on December 2 and again on January 11, 91-76.

Versus the Mounties, the ‘Canes have split their first two meetings this season with the ‘Canes losing 93-67 on November 16 before picking up a 76-72 win on January 26; all games were on the road.

The ‘Canes currently lead the conference in points per game at 86.0 with the Mounties in third at 83.8 and the Chargers in fourth at 81.1.

While the three teams can score, they can also defend as they’re ranked 1-2-3 in the conference in points allowed per game with Mount Allison at 72.5, Holland at 75.7, and Crandall at 78.1.

Individually, Jordan Holness leads the conference in scoring at 21 points per game while Nate Anderson is the ACAA’s top rebounder, averaging 11.2 per game.
