The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams were victorious on Saturday in Moncton, New Brunswick against the Crandall University Chargers in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season play; this was the first games of 2020 for both teams.  The women earned the 80-60 victory before the men completed the sweep on Saturday afternoon with a 91-76 win.

In the women’s game, the 4-2 Hurricanes took a 23-15 lead after the first quarter and would extend it to a 36-25 lead at the half over the 0-7 Chargers.

The ‘Canes would continue to build their lead in the third quarter, taking a 63-41 lead heading into the final quarter before securing the 20-point victory.

Courtney Cain-Nordin made an immediate impact in her ‘Canes debut recording a double-double with 22 points and ten rebounds. Aki Kobayashi had 14 points with Ashley Plaggenhoef recording 13 points and five rebounds.

Kassandra Little added ten points and seven rebounds while Danielle McKinnon came off the bench to score ten points in the win.

With the victory the Hurricanes improve to 5-2 on the season and are tied with the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils for second in the ACAA, while the Chargers remain in eighth place, dropping to 0-8.

In the men’s game the Hurricanes (4-2) struggled early and found themselves trailing the Chargers (4-3), 24-14 after the first quarter.

A strong second quarter would see the ‘Canes cut the deficit to 37-35 at the half before surging ahead in the third quarter, taking a 62-53 lead entering the game’s final quarter, eventually earning the 15-point victory.

Bryce Corless led the way offensively for the Hurricanes with a game-high 27 points with Nathan Anderson adding a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

Jordan Holness had 14 points in the game with Jayden McMullen adding 11 while Adrian Thompson had a strong showing off the bench in his ‘Canes debut recording 13 points and three rebounds.

The ‘Canes improve to 5-2 on the season with the win and are tied with the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies for second in the conference standings; the ‘Canes trail the first-place Mount Allison University (MTA) Mounties by two points in the standings with a game in-hand.

With the loss the Crandall Chargers drop to 4-4 on the season and sit in fourth place.

The basketball Hurricanes are back in action on Saturday, January 18 when they host the UKC Blue Devils at 5:30 and 7:30pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) in Charlottetown, PEI.  They will meet again at the CCE on Sunday, January 19 at 2 and 4pm (w/m).

The ‘Canes were set to host the Chargers this past Sunday in Charlottetown but both games were rescheduled to Friday, February 14 at 5 and 7pm (w/m) due to poor weather conditions.
