The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams won all four Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season games played this weekend at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) in Charlottetown, PEI.  The Hurricanes took on teams from the Crandall University Chargers (Friday) and Mount Allison University Mounties (Sunday).

In Friday’s women’s game versus the Chargers, the ‘Canes led 22-7 after one quarter and 45-17 at the half. The Hurricanes would continue to run away with the game, building up a 65-29 lead after three. A low scoring fourth quarter would see the ‘Canes walk away with a 76-37 win.

Sophie Atkinson came off the bench to lead the ‘Canes in scoring with 12 points while Courtney Cain-Nordin and Ashley Plaggenhoef added 11 and ten respectively. Plaggenhoef also hauled in eight rebounds along with four assists and four steals.

Kassandra Little and Molly Birtwhistle also grabbed eight rebounds to help lead the way on the glass. Nordin and Kennedy Frittenburg also recorded four steals.  

The Hurricanes saw all 11 active players receive playing time in the win, each recording at least a point and between 13 and 25 minutes of playing time.

With the loss the Chargers dropped to 0-15 on the season and sit in seventh place in the standings.

On Sunday versus the Mounties, the ‘Canes came out flying and took a 23-9 lead after the first quarter. The game would tighten up in the second and the ‘Canes took a 35-19 lead into the half-time break. The ‘Canes built their lead to 59-36 after three before a high-scoring fourth gave the ‘Canes an 80-66 win.

Atkinson led all Hurricanes scorers with 27 off the bench while also recording 11 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.

Aki Kobayashi also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds along with six assists, two steals, and three blocks. Little added 12 rebounds, seven steals, two assists, two steals, and three blocks while Danielle McKinnon chipped in with nine points, five rebounds, one assist and two steals.

The ‘Canes, now 12-3 on the season, are tied for first in the ACAA standings with the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies; the Mounties are in fifth and fall to 6-9 with Sunday’s loss.

In the men’s game on Friday versus Crandall, the ‘Canes took a 19-10 lead after the first and would extend it to 41-28 at the half. The ‘Canes added a couple more points to their lead and would lead 65-50 after three. The ‘Canes would build up a 74-54 lead in the fourth before a late run by the Chargers made the final 84-75 in favour of Holland College.

Jayden McMullen and Jordan Holness both had 24 points to lead all scorers for the Hurricanes. McMullen added four rebounds and three steals while Holness had nine rebounds four assists, two steals, and a block.

Adrian Thompson had 15 points and eight rebounds off the bench while Bryce Corless had 11 points, four rebounds, and one assist.

With the loss, the Chargers now sit in fifth place in the ACAA at 6-10.

On Sunday versus Mount Allison, the ‘Canes built up a 22-10 lead after a quarter and would lead 48-23 at the half. The Mounties cut into the lead in the third as the Hurricanes entered the final quarter up 71-52. The ‘Canes would go on to earn the 98-79 win.

McMullen led all Hurricanes scorers with 23 points with Holness right behind him with 21. McMullen added two rebounds and two assists while Holness had five rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

Corless added 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals while Thompson came off the bench with a 14-point, 16-rebound double-double while Marc Hofer added 11 points off the bench as well.

With the two weekend victories, the ‘Canes take sole possession of first place in the conference with a 12-3 record, just ahead of the Mounties who are now in second at 11-4.

The men’s and women’s Hurricanes, who each have just three regular season games remaining, will return to the court this Saturday, February 22 for their final home games of the season versus the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils at the Holland College CCE; the women tip-off at 1pm with the men following at 3pm.

The Blue Devils women are 9-7 and in fourth in the ACAA this season while the men are 2-14 and in seventh.  The ‘Canes have each won twice against the Blue Devils so far this regular season.
