Soccer players Emily Cormier and Alex Lourenso have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 22.
Cormier, from Charlottetown, PEI, contributed with two shots on goal in Friday’s 4-1 victory over the Dal AC Rams before scoring twice in Sunday’s 9-1 win over the Crandall Chargers; she also contributed with six shots on goal in the win.
The first-year striker adapted to playing several positions over the weekend for the ‘Canes.
“Her work rate on the defensive side helped us regain possession,” shared head coach Kris McKinnon. “On the offensive side she created chances for teammates and found the back of the net herself.”
Cormier studies in the Sport and Leisure Management program at Holland College.
The ‘Canes sit at 4-0-0 this season and lead the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) standings.
Lourenso, from Stratford, PEI, scored three times in the first half on Friday night in the Hurricanes 6-1 victory over the Rams, before adding two shots on goal in Sunday’s 8-0 win over the Chargers in Moncton.
Hurricanes head coach, Jonathan Vos, was impressed with the quality of play by Lourenso over the weekend.
“Alex was a big part of our offense breaking out this weekend. His pace and one-on-one ability kept the opponents back line on their toes.”
Lourenso studies in the Automotive Technology program at Holland College.
The men’s Hurricanes took over top-spot in the ACAA standings with the victories over the weekend; they now sit at 3-0-1.
The ‘Canes are on the road this weekend when they face the UKC Blue Devils and MSVU Mystics in Halifax. The teams next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, October 1 when they host the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves at 5 and 7pm (w/m) at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.
