Volleyball 'Canes see mixed results on the road

The Holland Hurricanes volleyball teams opened their 2019-20 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular seasons on the road this weekend when they traveled to Church Point, Nova Scotia to take on the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons.

The women’s Hurricanes went on to pick up a pair of straight sets wins while the men would lose both matches; a five-set thriller on Saturday before falling in four sets on Sunday.

In Saturday’s women’s game, the ‘Canes would go on to defeat the Dragons by set scores of 25-8, 25-17 and 25-10.

Statistically, Abby Hyndman led the attack for the Hurricanes with six kills while Marissa MacAulay had five; four other Hurricanes players ended the match with four.

MacAulay had a match-high 20 assists in the game for the ‘Canes with Dana Trainor leading the way in digs with 11.  Hyndman added five aces with Sam Gerbig recording four and three others adding three each.

On Sunday, the women’s Hurricanes defeated the Dragons by set scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-12.

Gerbig had six kills to lead the attack for Holland College with Kateia Barenaba and Kali Wilson adding five and four respectively.

MacAulay had a match-high 19 assists and seven aces while Gerbig added six aces in the win.

The ‘Canes are off to a 2-0 start after the first weekend of play while the Dragons drop to 0-2.

The Hurricanes will host their home opener next weekend, Saturday, November 9, when they host the 0-1, Crandall University Chargers on Saturday at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement; start time is at 12pm.

In men’s action on Saturday the Hurricanes fell to the Dragons by set scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 19-25 and 15-12.

Riley O’Keefe had 13 kills and Gordon Veitch had 12 to lead the ‘Canes attack in the loss, while

Brandon Hastings had 38 assists.  Veitch and Cole McKey added seven digs each in the match.

On Sunday, the ‘Canes fell in four sets by scores of 25-16, 21-25, 25-21 and 25-19.

Veitch led the way in kills for the Hurricanes with 13 while O’Keefe added nine. Hastings had 26 assists while Veitch and Colby Boyle each had eight digs in the loss.

The Hurricanes, the defending ACAA champions, are 0-2 to start the season and will look to get back on track when they host the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves on Saturday, November 9 in their home opener; first-serve is scheduled for 2pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
