WVBALL | Hurricanes sweep weekend matchups

The Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball team kicked off their season with a pair of straight-set victories over the weekend. On Saturday the ‘Canes defeated the Dal AC Rams on the road before winning their home opener against the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.

On Saturday versus the Rams, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-21.

Brittany States and Abby Hyndman both had six kills to lead the way for the ‘Canes with Taylor Allen recording four.  Both Lauren Moerike and Zayley Murphy had three while Laura Ready had a game-high 13 assists and six aces in the win.  The Hurricanes had a total of eight players record at least one dig in the match, led by States with four.

The Rams were led by Jillian Ferguuson (six kills), Sam Nichols (seven assists) and Laura Smith and Xenna Mazal (each with four digs).  Dal AC dropped to 0-1 on the season with the loss.

On Sunday in their home opener, in front of a jam-packed Holland College Centre for Community Engagement, the ‘Canes defeated the Mounties by set scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-22.

Brittany States and Abby Hyndman once again led the offense by picking up eight and seven kills respectively while Taylor Allen and Zayley Murphy chipped in with three each.

Laure Ready had a game-high 20 assists for the women in the win.

The ‘Canes recorded 16 service aces on the day led by Hyndman with five and Murphy with four. Katie Wood had 14 digs with Allen and Murphy both earning 11.

The ‘Canes are now 2-0 on the season while the Mounties fell to 1-1.

Top performers for Mount Allison on Sunday were Rachel MacDougall and Rachel Van Gestel (each with five kills and eight digs) and Sophie Landry (14 assists).

The ‘Canes return to action on Saturday, November 3 when they travel to Halifax, NS to take on the MSVU Mystics at 2pm.  They continue this road trip with a game in Church Point, NS on Sunday when they take on the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons at 10am.

The men’s Hurricanes will also open their season on Sunday versus the Dragons at 12pm.

The volleyball Hurricanes return home on Saturday, November 17 when they host the Dragons at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement; the women play at 4:30pm with the men’s game to follow at 6:30pm.
