Women knock off Rams; Men split with Dragons

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams saw mixed results on the weekend at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement. The women knocked off the Dal AC Rams in four sets on Saturday, while the men lost to the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons in five sets on Saturday and won in four sets on Sunday.

Set scores in the women’s game on Saturday were 25-13, 25-19, 23-25, 25-18.

Brittany States and Abby Hyndman both had 13 kills to lead the attack for the ‘Canes with Zayley Murphy and Taylor Allen adding nine and seven respectively.

Laura Ready dished out 39 assists for the ‘Canes while Katie Wood and Taylor Boudreau-Deveaux had 13 and ten digs respectively in the win. The ‘Canes had 17 service aces with eight players recording at least one, led by Murphy with four.

The Hurricanes now sit in a tie for third in the ACAA standings with a 4-2 record on the season, while the Rams are in seventh at 1-5.

In Saturday’s men’s game, set scores were 27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 25-21, 22-20 in favour of the Dragons.

Brett Butler had 26 kills in the match for the Hurricanes with Aaron Pugh adding nine and Riley O’Keefe recording seven.

Nicholas Menzies dished out a record-tying 54 assists in the match while also contributing seven aces and 11 digs. Jeff MacDonald led the way in digs with 16 and Zach Thibodeau had 11 in the loss.

On Sunday, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23.

Butler once again led the attack for Holland College with 16 kills while O’Keefe and Pugh 12 and 11 respectively.

Menzies had 40 assists for the ‘Canes while Butler had a team-high ten digs. Menzies and Thibodeau both had eight digs with Pugh and Keith Johnston chipping in with six apiece.

The ‘Canes are now 2-2 on the season and tied with UNBSJ for second, while the Dragons are 1-5 and in fourth place.

The men’s and women’s Hurricanes return to action this weekend, when they visit the STU Tommies in Fredericton.  Game times for Saturday, November 24 are 5:30/7:30pm (w/m) with matches taking place at 12 and 2pm the following day.

The women’s Hurricanes will play their next home game on Friday, November 30 when they host the Mount Allison Mounties at 7pm while both the men and women will play at home on Sunday, December 2 versus the UNBSJ Seawolves at 2 and 4pm (w/m).
