Men’s Hurricanes win season opener

The Holland Hurricanes women’s volleyball team dropped a four-set match to the MSVU Mystics on Saturday in Halifax, Nova Scotia, before both teams defeated the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons on Sunday in straight-sets.

In the women’s game on Saturday versus the Mystics, it was a battle of the only undefeated teams in the ACAA.

The Hurricanes would go on to win the first set 25-22, before dropping the next three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-23, and 25-11.

Brittany States led a balanced attack from the Hurricanes with seven kills while Taylor Allen and Abby Hyndman each had five, with Laura Ready and Philicia Johnson each having three.

Laura Ready contributed 20 assists for the ‘Canes while Kaite Wood had a team-high eight digs. Allen chipped in with six digs with Hyndman and Zayley Murphy both contributing four.

On Sunday, the ‘Canes were all over the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons, winning in straight sets by scores of 25-10, 25-13, 25-8.

States led the offense again with nine kills with Hyndman adding five and Ready and Sophia Blanchard recording three each.

Ready had a game-high 18 assists while States led the way in digs with seven. Blanchard, Ready, and Sara Jenkins all had five digs each.

The women’s Hurricanes now sit in a three-way tie for second place in the ACAA standings with a 3-1 record. The Dragons are 0-4 while the Mystics are in first place with a 4-0 record.

In the men’s season opener on Sunday versus the Dragons, the ‘Canes won in straight sets by scores of 25-18, 25-21, and 25-15.

Brett Butler and Aaron Pugh each had seven kills in the match with Jeff MacDonald and Kamden Arsenault picking up four each.

Nicholas Menzies had a match-high 19 assists, while Marcus Lapointe had a match-high 10 digs in the win.

The ‘Canes are 1-0 to start the season while the Dragons fall to 0-2.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Saint John, New Brunswick to take on the UNBSJ Seawolves at 2 and 4pm (w/m).

The Hurricanes return home on Saturday, November 17 when the women host the Dal AC Rams at 4:30pm followed by the men hosting their home opener versus the Dragons at 6:30pm.
