Hurricanes perfect in opening weekend

September 10, 2018

Both the men’s and women’s soccer Hurricanes started their seasons on a high note this weekend, going undefeated in four games played.

The women’s squad took care of the Dal AC Rams on Saturday at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall, quickly jumping out to a big lead in the first half. They scored their first goal of the game just four minutes in when Laura Wells opened the scoring. Kathrine McEwen would add goals in the 11’ and 33’ before Ali Fahie (34’) and Wells (35’) gave the ‘Canes a 5-0 lead entering halftime.

The second half was more of the same as the Hurricanes matched their impressive goal total of the first half. Jade Stewart would score twice, in the 63’ and 65’, while Emily Rasmussen (82’), Grace Peardon (83’) and Taylor Thorne (86’) would close out the scoring, giving the Hurricanes a 10-0 win.

On Sunday in Moncton, NB, the hot offence of the Hurricanes was stifled for the first half by the Crandall Chargers as both teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.

Kathrine MacEwen notched her third goal of the weekend just two minutes into the second half to put the ‘Canes ahead 1-0, which is how the game would end.

Holland College keeper, Hailey Terstege, was perfect all weekend not allowing a single goal.

The women’s soccer Hurricanes sit at 2-0 in the ACAA standings, tied with the STU Tommies for top spot after the opening weekend of play.

The men’s Hurricanes opened up their season on Saturday when they took on the Dal AC Rams in Cornwall.

The Hurricanes dominated right from the opening kick-off.

Tjeerd Schep scored within the first minute of play and the ‘Canes never looked back. Shunya Kobayashi added to the Hurricanes lead less than 10 minutes later followed by goals from Ehab Moustafa in the 11’ and 23’.

Moustafa showed Hurricanes fans the future is bright as he scored his third of the game in the 60’ leading the Hurricanes to a season opening 5-0 victory.

Sunday’s men’s match versus the Crandall Chargers was another hard-fought defensive stalemate in the first half.

In the second half the Hurricanes would bust the game wide open with five straight goals.

Harrison Ellison would get things started in the 53’ with Alex Lourenso’s goal in the 62’ putting the ‘Canes up 2-0.  Goals from Iatrou (77’), Schep (84’) and James Briand (90’) gave the Hurricanes the win.

Brandon Lund was perfect in two games played for the ‘Canes, not allowing a goal over the weekend.

With a record of 2-0, the Hurricanes and the UKC Blue Devils sit atop the ACAA standings after the opening week of play.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Saturday, September 15 when they welcome the MSVU Mystics to town with games at 1 and 3pm (w/m).  Play continues at home on Sunday when the ‘Canes challenge the UKC Blue Devils at 2 and 4pm (w/m).
