‘Canes perfect to end regular season

September 24, 2018

The Holland Hurricanes men’s baseball team finished their regular season with four straight wins this weekend versus the Dalhousie University Tigers and St. Francis Xavier University X-Men.  The victories improve the Hurricanes record to 10-0 (won-lost), ending their regular season with the best record in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association.

Wins of 16-3 and 12-2 in Halifax, NS over the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday were followed by victories of 5-4 and 18-3 versus the St. FX X-Men at home on Sunday.

Saturday, Game 1 | Holland College 16 at Dalhousie University 3

Ryan Abraham worked five innings in a game one win to pick up his third victory of the season, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked just one Tigers hitter, and recorded four strikeouts. Johnathan Savidant pitched the final two innings to wrap up the contest.

Charles McLellan (2-3, 2 RBI, 3 R) led the way for the Hurricanes at the plate. Jay Oram, Curtis McGregor, and Chasse Gallant each had two hits and combined for five runs scored. Leadoff hitter Jayden Jones (2-3, BB, 2B, 2 R) carried the top line for the Tigers’ offense.

Saturday, Game 2 | Holland College 12 at Dalhousie University 2 (Final/5)

Tyler Johnston improved to 3-0 with a five-inning complete-game effort in the second game of Saturday’s double-header. Johnston allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits, while retiring five Tigers hitters by way of strikeout; the crafty veteran didn’t walk a batter.

Matt Barlow (2-5, 3 RBI, R) and Jay Oram (2-3, 3R) paced the Hurricanes offense as Holland College picked up their 8th consecutive victory. Cam MacPherson was 1-2 with a run scored against Johnston.

Barlow, the Hurricanes second baseman, attributed the victories to a complete team effort. “It was a good day of contributions from the guys across the board. Our pitchers continue to provide strong efforts,” noted Barlow.

Sunday, Game 1 | Holland College 5 vs St. Francis Xavier University 4

The Hurricanes erased a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep their perfect season alive in Sunday’s opening game versus St. FX.

An RBI double by Curtis McGregor scored the Hurricanes first run in the inning, followed by walks by Chasse Gallant and Jay Oram, giving the ‘Canes the 5-4 walk-off victory.

Chandler Laporte was the Hurricanes winning pitcher, improving his record to 2-0 on the season.  He pitched all seven innings for the ‘Canes.

Sunday, Game 2 | Holland College 18 vs St. Francis Xavier University 3

The Hurricanes offense might have been held in check during the first game of the day, but the lineup over-compensated in the second game, posting 18 runs in three and two-thirds innings. The game was ended due to the Baseball Canada mercy rule.

Charles MacLellan pitched 3.1 innings for the ‘Canes, earning the victory, with Parker Gallant entering the game in relief.

The Hurricanes will return to action when they attend the 2018 Canadian Collegiate Baseball Championship in Toronto, ON October 25-28, hosted by the Humber College Hawks.
