‘Canes complete New Brunswick road trip this weeke

September 24, 2018

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s soccer teams were on the road this past weekend in ACAA regular season action with games versus the UNBSJ Seawolves and STU Tommies.

The Hurricanes women’s team went 1-1-0, defeating UNBSJ on Saturday by a score of 1-0 before falling to STU, 3-1 on Sunday.  The men’s Hurricanes tied a hard-fought game against UNBSJ 0-0 on Saturday before falling to the STU Tommies on Sunday, 2-0.

On Saturday in Saint John, versus the Seawolves, a scoreless first half tie in the women’s game was broken by Hurricanes striker, Nicole Fergusson, giving the Hurricanes the 1-0 advantage in the 63’.

That would be all the Hurricanes would need as Hailey Terstege would be rock-solid in goal for Holland College, recording the 1-0 shutout victory.

In Sunday’s action, the women’s Hurricanes fell behind early in the first half when the Tommies opened the scoring in the 16’.  STU would enter the half-time leading 1-0.

In the second half, STU again came out strong adding to their lead in the 60’ before Kathrine McEwen put the Hurricanes on the board with a goal in the 79’.

STU would score once more in 83’ to earn the 3-1 victory.

With a win and a loss this weekend, the women’s Hurricanes are now 4-2-0 this season and sit in third place in the ACAA standings behind the STU Tommies (5-0-1) and MSVU Mystics (4-1-1).

The men’s ‘Canes were firing on all cylinders on Saturday versus the Seawolves but couldn’t get anything past the goalkeeper.  With either team unable to get on the scoreboard, the game would end in a scoreless draw; the first for the Hurricanes this season.

On Sunday the men once again came out firing but could not capitalize as the STU Tommies scored goals in the 45’ and 84’ to hand the ‘Canes their first loss of the season by a score of 2-0.

With the weekend draw and loss, the Hurricanes now sit at 4-1-1 in the standings; they remain in first place over the MSVU Mystics (3-1-2), STU Tommies (3-1-2) and UKC Blue Devils (3-1-1).

Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams will be back on the pitch on Saturday, September 29 when they visit the MSVU Mystics in Halifax for games at 2pm.

The Hurricanes next home games are on Wednesday, October 10 when they host the Crandall Chargers at 6 and 8pm (w/m) at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.
