A win and a loss for Hurricanes in Saint John

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams split their games on Sunday against the UNBSJ Seawolves in Saint John, New Brunswick. The women fell to the Seawolves by a score of 83-76, while the men came away with a 107-72 victory.

In the women’s game, the ‘Canes fell behind 24-13 after one quarter and trailed 48-33 at the half. The deficit continued to grow in the third as they fell behind 74-57. The Hurricanes closed the gap in the fourth quarter but were unable to complete the comeback.

With the 83-76 loss, the Hurricanes fall to 0-2 to start the season.  Both games have been extremely close to open the season for the ‘Canes, losing by an average of only 5.5 points per game.

Ashley Plaggenhoef led the offense for the Hurricanes with a team-high 17 points along with one assist and three steals. Jayla Verney added 13 points, two assists and three steals while Tyleigha Nelson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds along with one assist, three steals, and three blocks. Lexi MacInnis added 11 points, four rebounds, and two steals in the loss.

With the season opening victory, the Seawolves sit at 1-0 early this season.

In the men’s game, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 32-18 lead after the first quarter and would continue to build on their lead, ahead 54-37 at the half, and 83-57 after three.

Jace Colley had a team-high 20 points to lead a balanced attack from the Hurricanes that saw seven players reach double-digits in scoring. Colley also chipped in four rebounds, two assists, and a block.

Jordan Holness had 19 points, eight rebounds, and six steals while both Martin Campbell and Connor Therrien had 15 points each. Campbell added six rebounds, one assist, and one steal while Therrien had two rebounds, one assist, and five steals.

Antonio Kostakos, with 13 points and six rebounds, Demeric Mercer with 11 points, and Agak Lual with ten points, were the other ‘Canes in double figures.

With the 107-72 win, the Hurricanes are off to a 2-0 start to the season while the Seawolves drop to 0-1.

The ‘Canes return to the court next weekend when they hit the road to take on the Crandall Chargers (Saturday at 2/4pm) and STU Tommies (Sunday at 2/4pm).

The ‘Canes next home game is Saturday, November 17 when they face the Dal AC Rams at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement at 12 and 2pm.
