Men's Volleyball 'Canes drop pair of matches to UNBSJ

The Holland Hurricanes men’s volleyball team lost twice over the weekend to the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves on the road in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season action.

Set scores in Saturday’s five-set loss were 25-21, 17-25, 18-25, 25-19 and 15-10 in favour of the Seawolves.

Nick Blewett led the attack with 11 kills for the ‘Canes while Gordon Veitch and Riley O’Keefe each had nine and Simon Archibald added eight.

Brandon Hastings contributed 30 assists in the match with Veitch leading the way in digs with 12; Blewett and Alex Joudrey each had four aces in the loss.

On Sunday, the Seawolves used scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 27-25 to win in straight-sets.

Blewett once again led the attack for the Hurricanes with 15 kills with Veitch adding eight.

Hastings and Archibald split setting duties in the match, recording 17 and 13 assists respectively; Archibald also had a team-high nine digs, with Colby Boyle adding seven in the loss.

The ‘Canes fall to fourth in the standings with a 1-4 record on the season while the Seawolves lead the conference with a 3-1 record.

The Hurricanes return to action on Saturday, November 23 when the host the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies (2-1) at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown.  This will be the first time the Tommies and Hurricanes face each other this regular season; first-serve is scheduled for 8pm.

The women’s Hurricanes were scheduled to host the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Saturday in Charlottetown, however, due to high-winds and restrictions in place on the Confederation Bridge, the game was rescheduled to Sunday, December 1 at 1pm.  The Hurricanes will return to action on Saturday in Charlottetown at 6pm versus the 2-2, Tommies.
