XC 'Canes looking to make history at ACAA championship

The Holland Hurricanes will host the top five Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) cross country running programs this Saturday at the 2019 ACAA Cross Country Running Championships being held at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park at Brookvale, PEI.

The Hurricanes are looking to continue their recent success with the home course advantage, attempting to make history as they chase the men’s title.  The ‘Canes team have won two of the last three meets and will be confident entering Saturday.

This sentiment is echoed by ‘Canes runner, Ben Sullivan, who is hoping to lead Holland College to a team title.

“We are hoping through our speed, grit and determination, that the Hurricanes will be successful and make history in our own backyard this weekend.”

The women’s team is hoping to improve on their last two meets, where they finished third.  They will rely on Rebecca Levy to lead the way; she has finished second and first in her last two meets.

Rebecca is anticipating good things to happen this weekend for the Hurricanes.

“My expectations for this weekend are high. I think the men and women both stand good chances of taking home a banner after our strong running season this fall.”

Head coach, Andrew Dobson, is excited to be hosting the ACAA Championships again this year, and is optimistic of the Hurricanes chances.

“Any time you have the opportunity to run a race on the same course you train on all season should play to your advantage. As a team we had taken the mentality of trying to improve at every single meet and to peak where it counts, at the ACAA Championships.”

Women’s runners for the Hurricanes this weekend are Rebecca Levy, Alicia McIsaac, Leslie Adderley, Marth Day, Teanna Letkeman and Zora Wendt.  The women’s race, made up of 37 competitors, will start at 12pm.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes men’s team of Ben Sullivan, James Wilmot, Bejamin Nwaogazi-Awuja, Carter van de Wiel, Ian McKenna, Trent Lambert and Tristan Rampersad will compete with 29 runners beginning at 1pm.

The event is free admission and open to the general public to attend.
