Nelson wins again in Daytona as regular season ends

Jacob Nelson (Clarksville, Tennessee, USA) showed why he is the king of Daytona on Tuesday night, once again going to victory lane when he won the Cracked Device Co. 200 at Daytona International Speedway. This is the third time he’s won at Daytona this season; first winning The Clash, pre-season qualifying race, then the Holland College 250, the season opener.

This was the final event of the 16-race regular season; the playoffs will begin next Tuesday at the Fix Auto 250 at Darlington Raceway.

Rounding out the top five on Tuesday night was Ryan Gibson in second, Mike Marini in third, Corbin MacAulay in fourth and Jason Maluchnik in fifth.

During the regular season, Chevrolet was victorious eight times, while Ford claimed victories in seven races; Toyota picked up one win.

The sixteen drivers that have secured spots in the post-season are Darcy Ford, Jose Mercado, Ryan Gibson, Jacob Nelson, Mike Marini, Scott Bailey, Corbin MacAulay, Kevin Daigle, Jason Maluchnik, Chad Hyder, Jason MacQuarrie, Daniel Cudmore, Trevor Kinsey, Kevin Fenech, Lee Campbell and Michael Robinson.

The top 12 drivers after the opening round of the playoffs (Darlington, Richmond, Bristol) will advance to the second round.

Cracked Device Co. 200 race recap

Jason Butler and Michael Dimitroff started on the front row to begin the Cracked Device Co. 200 on Tuesday night, two drivers needing victories to advance to the post-season.

After a wreck that affected most in the middle portion of the field on lap one, Butler, Dalton Simpson, Dimitroff and Lee Campbell broke away from the rest of the pack in the early portion of the race; there was a scheduled caution for lap 23. Entering the caution, Trent Neilson held the lead.

During the second green flag run, another mid-field wreck separated the pack as they raced towards the second scheduled caution on lap 49. Eventually, Jacob Nelson would find his way to the front of the field until the field made pit stops under the yellow flag.

The final green flag run, lasting 28-laps, began with Lee Campbell and Dalton Simpson leading the way as the field jostled for position behind them.  Eventually, Nelson, MacAulay, Gibson and Mercado would break out on their own as the final green flag pit stops approached.

As the end of the race drew closer, it became a two-car race as Nelson and Gibson raced nose-to-tail in the final laps. Things got exciting as the two cars approached lapped car, Kevin Daigle. Nelson moved to the outside to make the pass while Gibson attempted to draft off of Daigle to get ahead of the leader.  Nelson was able to complete the pass on the lapped car, and return to the inside line ahead of Daigle and Gibson in the race to the checkered flag, earning the victory.
