Holland College officially named the MacDonald Centre for Student Wellness and Academic Success at its Prince of Wales Campus during a special ceremony held on Friday, honouring the remarkable leadership and lasting contributions of outgoing President & CEO, Dr. Alexander (Sandy) MacDonald.
The naming recognizes Dr. MacDonald’s seven and a half years as the College’s sixth President & CEO, during which he championed student success, wellness, and a culture of care across the institution.
“The naming of the MacDonald Centre for Student Wellness and Academic Success celebrates a remarkable leader and a lasting legacy,” said Jessie Inman, Chair, Holland College Board of Governors. “Sandy’s leadership has strengthened Holland College in every way, with a deep commitment to the wellbeing and success of our students and staff.”
Dr. MacDonald guided the institution through significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, Hurricane Fiona, and changes in the international student landscape. Known for his thoughtful and empathetic leadership, he placed students at the forefront of decision-making, prioritizing mental health and wellness, expanding supports, and championing student success. The newly named centre reflects those values.
Originally opened in 2024 following a $5.9 million renovation and expansion, the MacDonald Centre for Student Wellness and Academic Success brings together academic supports, primary health care, and mental health services in one integrated, modern space. Designed to meet students where they are, the centre offers individualized supports and serves learners across all Holland College campuses throughout Prince Edward Island.
The project was made possible through a strong partnership with the Province of Prince Edward Island, along with $2.7 million raised by the Holland College Foundation through its Thrive campaign.
“Sandy understood that supporting the whole student is essential to success,” said Kent Scales, Past Chair and Thrive Campaign Chair, Holland College Foundation. “His leadership helped inspire donors and strengthen a culture of giving that made this centre possible. He believed deeply that when we invest in wellness and remove barriers, we change lives.”
Dr. MacDonald will retire at the end of June. The MacDonald Centre for Student Wellness and Academic Success stands as a lasting tribute to his leadership and impact on Holland College and its community.
“I am truly honoured to be recognized in this way,” said Dr. MacDonald. “This centre holds a special place for me, as it reflects our shared commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our students, our staff, and our community as a whole.”
