WSOC | Hurricanes add McEwen to roster for the fall

April 12, 2018

Kathrine McEwen

The Holland Hurricanes have added Islander Kathrine McEwen to their women’s soccer roster for the upcoming season.  The speedy center-midfielder is from Stratford, Prince Edward Island and will be studying in the Business Administration program.

McEwen begins her collegiate career with premier, provincial and Canada Games experience on her resume.

“I decided to enroll at Holland College as their two-plus-two business degree offers an opportunity to learn both the practical and theoretical side of business,” she expressed.  “Taking the two-plus-two also provides numerous different co-op and OJT opportunities.”

Head coach Kris McKinnon is pleased with the new addition to his roster for this fall.

“Kathrine will have a positive impact on our team from day one.  Her soccer IQ and experience in playing at the highest level will serve her and the team well.  Kathrine’s vision and composure with the ball will help her teammates around her.  We as a program are very excited to add Kathrine to the ‘Canes family both as a person and athlete.”

McEwen has a strong connection to the Hurricanes; her sister was a member of the ‘Canes women’s golf team for two seasons (2015 and 2016) and her father currently serves as an assistant coach with the women’s soccer Hurricanes.

“I have been following the Hurricanes and they have proven to be a competitive program year after year. I look forward to becoming part of a top-level team and growing as a player throughout the upcoming seasons,” she shared.

When asked what her strengths were on the pitch she described herself as someone with the “ability to see the field well.”  She also defined herself as someone who “plays with a competitive attitude” and someone who “recognizes the importance and advantages of fitness at this level,” stating that her goal was to come to training camp in shape and ready to perform at her best.

The Hurricanes are looking to rebound after a disappointing season in 2017 where they struggled in the second half, narrowly missing the playoffs with a record of 4-5-3 through a tiebreaker for fourth position.

“I believe I can bring positive leadership qualities to the team,” shared McEwen.  “I am a very vocal player who is always trying to encourage my teammates and ask for their best effort both on and off the field.  Expect a very offensive team in 2018 as we look to compete with the best in the conference this season.”
