WRING | Hurricanes looking to solidify inaugural season with University Cup
March 8, 2018
The Holland Hurricanes ringette team will bring their inaugural season to an end when they travel to Halifax to take part in the University Cup Championships this weekend.
In their first season of play the Hurricanes have performed exceptionally well with a record of 12-4-2 and are confident that success can be obtained this weekend as echoed by Hurricanes player and Paramedicine student Christena Visser.
“Going into our first championship weekend I feel that our team is prepared. Some of our biggest assets are our speed and endurance, which will give us an advantage later in the games. I think it is an even field of strong teams; if we continue to play hard and smart, we will do well.”
Hurricanes head coach Stephen Gallaway is looking forward to finishing the year on a strong note.
“At the beginning of this inaugural season our main objective was to ice a ringette team that would be competitive in the University league. We quickly realized after the first weekend of play that we had a team of skilled players who had the drive to win. The girls developed over the course of the season and our opponents often underestimated us; the girls have been fun to coach. Our objective for this weekend is nothing less than returning to Holland College with the University Cup banner.”
Teams competing for the championship alongside the Hurricanes will be the Dalhousie Tigers, Saint Mary’s Huskies and Acadia Axewomen.
Action for the Hurricanes will start on Friday at 9pm when they face Acadia. Two more games will follow on Saturday, first versus the Huskies at 9:45am followed by the Tigers at 4:15pm. The semi-finals and finals will take place on Sunday.
