March 12, 2018
The Hurricanes finished with a record of 1-2-0 following the round robin, positioning them as the third seed entering the championship round.
With a 5-3 loss to Acadia, followed by a 3-2 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies and a 5-3 loss to Dalhousie, the Hurricanes went into Sunday’s semifinal feeling motivated; they went on to defeat Acadia by a score of 7-2, earning a birth to the championship game.
Scoring for the Hurricanes in the semi-finals was Olivia Gill (2G), Alysha Corrigan (1G 1A), Sue-Ellen McInnis (1G 1A) Paige Blakely (1G 1A) and Brianne Curley (1G). Assists went to McCabe and Isabelle Saunders; Hurricanes goaltender Kate Moss earned the victory.
In the championship game, the Hurricanes faced the Dalhousie Tigers and were victorious by a score of 3-2.
The Hurricanes were led by McInnis scoring the hat trick while Ayrna Rogers and Alysha Corrigan earned one assist each; Moss was credited with the win in goal for the Hurricanes.
Head coach, Stephen Gallaway was proud of his team’s performance.
“Our girls played a great weekend of ringette,” he said. “It certainly was a dramatic win. Dalhousie has matched our speed in every game we played this season and scores have been very close. We expected it would be the same in the final. We knew it was not going to be easy, but the girls were in the right mindset from the start of the game. We came out strong and finished with a great defensive effort and received stellar goaltending.”
This brings the Hurricanes inaugural season to an end and with a record of 15-6-2, complete with two championships (Harbour City Lakers Colt tournament, January 21) and the University Cup.
