Women’s Hockey hosts Acadia in home opener weekend
November 21, 2013
The women’s Hurricanes hockey team has been working hard the past few weeks in preparation for their home opener taking place this Saturday night against the Acadia University. Puck drop is at 8 pm at the APM Centre in Cornwall.
First year player Alex Hicks is excited about the weekend games. “I think the games this weekend will be challenging, but we’ve got enough talent on our team to hold our own. We’ve trained hard at practice and our skills sessions over the past few weeks and I think we are all physically and mentally prepared to come out of this weekend with two good games.”
The Hurricanes are members of the Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League which features four teams; the University of New Brunswick, Cape Breton University and Acadia University and the Hurricanes. The Hurricanes have played two of their regular season games this season, both at UNB, falling in both games 4-2 and 3-2.
After taking last season off from women’s hockey the Hurricanes have returned to the ice with a fresh lineup and a new league. In exhibition play this season with IWHL teams the ‘Canes have a 2-0-1 record.
The Acadia women’s hockey team currently sits in second place with a 2-1-1 record.
“We are looking forward to our home opener; after our games with UNB we have a better idea of what we are up against. The girls have been working very hard to prepare for this weekend and we are seeing the improvements. In this league any team can win on any given night, we just have to come to the rink ready to play and ready to outwork Acadia on every shift”, shared head coach Morgan Rice.
Holland College and Acadia will also be in action on Sunday for a special Hurricanes home game held at The Plex on the Slemon Park campus in Summerside. Game time is set for 11:30 am.
