November 14, 2017

Koughan

It was a positive weekend for the Hurricanes as they swept the Acadia Axewomen in back-to-back home games.

Saturday’s game ended in a 6-0 victory for the ‘Canes before they claimed a second victory on Sunday by a score of 4-2.

A big first period for the Hurricanes, which included two power play goals, gave them the 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Goal scorers were Jess Redmond, Annika Mason and Sam Higgins.

Three more goals in the second period would give the ‘Canes all they would need to cruise to a 6-0 win. Katie-Lynn Cummiskey, Katie Parkman and Higgins were the goal scorers in the second period for the Hurricanes.

Mackenzie Koughan was the goaltender for the Hurricanes picking up the shutout win. This is her second straight shutout to begin the season as she’s yet to allow a goal against in 90 minutes of action to start 2017-18.

Sunday’s game would be much more competitive, with the Axewomen taking the early 1-0 lead entering the first intermission; Hilary Dort was the Acadia goal scorer.

The Hurricanes would tie the game in the second period when Higgins would find the back of the net sending the game into the third period tied; assists went to Katelyn Dunn and Redmond on the Higgins goal.

In the third period the Hurricanes would pounce.

With 13:09 remaining, Nicole Gallant would give the ‘Canes the 2-1 lead after her point shot was deflected and found the back of the net. Just two minutes later Parkman would extend the lead to 3-1 before Dunn scored with 7:38 remaining to make it 4-1 Hurricanes. Acadia would score with 6:09 remaining with a goal from Maddie Bourque but this is as close as they would get.

Kara Mason picked up the win in goal for the Hurricanes.

The ‘Canes now sit at 3-1 this season as they enter a big weekend of road games coming up versus the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. Saturday’s game begins at 3:30pm with Sunday’s getting underway at 10:30am; both games take place at the Aitken Center on the UNB campus.
