VBALL | Hurricanes tangle with Tommies over weekend in Charlottetown

The men’s and women’s volleyball Hurricanes hosted the St. Thomas Tommies over the weekend at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement in ACAA regular season action. The women’s ‘Canes swept two matches while the men’s teams split the weekend with one win apiece.
The women’s Hurricanes earned set wins of 25-12, 29-27 and 25-20 to sweep Saturdays matchup with Brittany States and Megan LeBlanc leading the way with 10 kills each. Lauren Moerike picked up three service aces for Holland College while Dana Trainor had 14 digs.
On Sunday the ‘Canes continued where they left of the day prior, earning the victory with set wins of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-16. 17 kills from LeBlanc, 10 service aces from Sam Gerbig and 12 digs from Trainor paced the ‘Canes to their sixth win of the season; they now sit in third place in the ACAA standings with a 6-2 record.
The Hurricanes will continue their season with a road trip next weekend to Halifax to take on the MSVU Mystics (10-0) on Saturday at 2pm followed by a match versus the UKC Blue Devils (4-3) on Sunday at 12pm.
The men’s Hurricanes dropped a five set thriller on Saturday to the Tommies by scores of 25-16, 24-26, 24-26, 25-14 and 13-15. This was the ‘Canes first loss of the season.
The Hurricanes were led by Gordon Veitch with 18 kills, Aaron Pugh with three service aces and Marcus Lapointe with 11 digs in the loss.
On Sunday the Hurricanes rebounded with set scores of 25-16, 18-25, 25-20 and 25-23 to win the match in four sets.
Veitch was strong once again with 14 kills and three service aces while Lapointe had eight digs in the win.
With the split over the weekend the Hurricanes now sit at 7-1 in the ACAA standings and remain in first place.
The ‘Canes return to action this Saturday on the road versus the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons (0-6) in Church Point, NS at 7pm.
