VBALL | Hurricanes perfect on the road versus Dragons

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams picked up four wins over the weekend when they visited the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons; both teams picked ups straight sets victories on back-to-back days.

In the women’s match on Saturday set scores were 25-12, 25-18 and 25-16.

The ‘Canes attack was led by Megan LeBlanc with 11 kills, four aces and nine digs. Philicia Johnson added eight digs while Brittany States had six kills and five aces.

Gracie Ferguson and Emma Joudrey split setting duties recording 14 and 11 assists respectively while Dana Trainor led the ‘Canes in digs with nine.

The ‘Canes recorded an impressive 19 aces in the match led by Sam Gerbig with six.

On Sunday for the ‘Canes women’s set scores were 25-15, 25-13 and 25-13.

LeBlanc once again led the attack with 14 kills while States added eight and Sam Gerbig had seven in the win.

Ferguson and Joudrey once again split setting duties with both recording 17 assists in the match. Trainor led the way in digs with a game high 16 while Gerbig recorded 11.

The ‘Canes had 13 aces in the match led by Lauren Moerike with four and Joudrey with three.

The two wins moves the ‘Canes record to 14-3 on the season which has them in second place in the ACAA standings while the Dragons fall to 0-17 with the two losses.

The women return to the court on Saturday, February 10 when they host the UKC Blue Devils at 7pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.

In the men’s match on Saturday set scores were 25-17, 31-29 and 26-24.

Brett Butler led the attack with 14 kills along with four digs and three blocks while Gordon Veitch had eight kills and Aaron Pugh added six in the win.

Nathan Archibald and Nicholas Menzies split the setting duties recording 22 and 13 assists respectively with Marcus Lapointe leading the way in digs with a game-high 16.

Set scores on Sunday for the men were 25-11, 25-11 and 26-24.

Veitch led the way in kills with 11 while Butler added nine and Jeff MacDonald had eight in the victory.

Menzies and Archibald once again split setting duties picking up 16 and 12 assists respectively while Lapointe and Butler both had five digs to lead the way for the ‘Canes.

The two victories move the men’s ‘Canes record to 12-1 on the season which is good for first place while the Dragons fall to 0-13 and sit in fourth.

With just four games remaining in the regular season the Hurricanes have secured first place entering the ACAA Championships in Fredericton hosted by the STU Tommies. The ‘Canes and Dragons will face off in ACAA semi-final action on Saturday, February 24.

The next action for the men’s Hurricanes takes place on Sunday, February 11 as they host the STU Tommies at 4pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
