VBALL | Hurricanes perfect on home court versus UNBSJ Seawolves

The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams won all four games they played this weekend with the women picking up two straight sets wins while the men won in four sets on Saturday and straight sets on Sunday; all games were played at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement versus the UNBSJ Seawolves.
In the women’s game on Saturday set scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-15 for the ‘Canes.
The ‘Canes attack was led by Megan LeBlanc with 17 kills while also recording 14 digs. Sam Gerbig added 14 kills with Brittany States picked up seven in the win.
Gracie Ferguson dished out a game-high 36 assists along with four aces and three digs while Dana Trainor recorded a game-high 16 digs in the win.
On Sunday, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-18.
LeBlanc once again led the attack picking up 18 kills in the match with 12 digs while States recorded another eight kills along with an ace and three blocks.
Ferguson once again led the Hurricanes in assists with a game high 32 while Trainor and Gerbig added 12 digs in the win.
The pair of wins moves the ‘Canes to 11-3 on the season which has them tied for second place in the ACAA standings alongside the STU Tommies. The Seawolves fall to 10-6 and sit in fourth place.
The women return to the court on Wednesday as they host the Mount Allison Mounties at 7pm in Charlottetown.
In the men’s game on Saturday, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-19 and 25-18.
Brett Butler led the attack with a match-high 23 kills while Gordon Veitch added 17 and Tyler Lahaise picked up nine; Butler also had four aces while Aaron Pugh had three.
Nicholas Menzies had 51 assists in the game, which is tied for the second most ever recorded in a single match in Hurricanes men’s volleyball history.
Marcus Lapointe led the way in digs with nine while five other players recorded between four and seven digs for Holland College.
On Sunday, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-20, 25-20 and 25-23.
Butler once again led the attack with 13 kills with Pugh and Lahaise both adding eight.
Menzies dished out 36 assists in the match while Lapointe and Veitch both led the way with eight digs.
With the two weekend victories the ‘Canes move to 10-1 on the season and have an eight point lead over STU and UNBSJ with four games remaining. The Seawolves are now 6-5 on the season and are tied with STU for second place in the ACAA standings.
The men return to the court next weekend as they travel to Church Point, Nova Scotia as they face the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons.
