VBALL | Hurricanes men win, women split road matches this weekend

The Holland Hurricanes men’s volleyball team defeated the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons in straight sets in Church Point, NS on Saturday, while the women dropped a straight sets match to the MSVU Mystics in Halifax. The women would bounce back on Sunday and defeat the UKC Blue Devils in straight sets, also in Halifax.

In the men’s match on Saturday, Gordon Veitch and Brett Butler both had seven kills to lead the attack while Nicholas Menzies had 14 assists and Nathan Archibald had six.

Butler and Veitch also led the way from the service line recording five and four aces respectively with Veitch leading the team in digs with eight and Marcus Lapointe adding six.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-18, 25-20.

The win moves the ‘Canes to 8-1 on the season keeping them in first place in the ACAA standings while the Dragons fall to 0-7 on the season.

The ‘Canes return to action on Saturday, January 27 when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves at 8pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.

In the women’s match on Saturday, Megan LeBlanc had seven kills while Brittany States, Lauren Moerike, and Sam Gerbig combined for the remaining six. Gracie Ferguson had 12 assists in the match.

LeBlanc also led the way in digs with six while Dana Trainor had five and Ferguson and Moerike both had three in the loss. States added three service aces for the ‘Canes.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-16, 25-19.

On Sunday, the ‘Canes attack was led by LeBlanc and States who had 12 and ten kills respectively while Ferguson had 27 assists and Trainor added five in the win.

Trainor had a match high 12 digs with LeBlanc adding nine and Ferguson eight while Gerbig and Ferguson both had three aces in the win

Set scores were 25-13, 25-17, 25-21.

The weekend split puts the ‘Canes record at 7-3 for the season which is good for third place in the ACAA standings while MSVU remains in first at 10-0 and UKC is fifth at 5-4.

The women’s ‘Canes return to the court on Saturday, January 20 at 1pm when they host the Dal AC Rams at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement as part of a weekend home-and-home.
