VBALL | Hurricanes hit the road to open second semester

The Holland College Hurricanes volleyball teams open the second half with their longest road trip of the regular season. The men’s team plays twice against the Université de Sainte-Anne Dragons in Church Point, NS while the women’s team plays against the Dragons on Saturday and the Dal AC Rams on Sunday in Truro, NS.

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes start the second semester ranked ninth in the country by the CCAA with an 8-1 record which has them atop the ACAA standings.

The ‘Canes are first in the ACAA in kills per set, assists per set, aces per set and points per set while sitting second in hitting percentage and blocks per set.

Individually, Gracie Ferguson’s 7.13 assists averaged per set leads the conference while Dana Trainor’s 3.97 digs averaged per set is also the best in the ACAA.

Both Dal AC and the Université de Sainte-Anne are tied for sixth in the ACAA with records of 1-6 and 1-7 respectively. The ‘Canes were victories in both meetings against the Dragons this season; both matches were decided by scores of 3-1 on November 12th and 13th. The Hurricanes and Rams will be facing off for the first time this season.

The women are coming off of a busy holiday season which included a victory over the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds of the AUS last week in exhibition play in Fredericton, NB. The Hurricanes then followed up with a second place finish in an exhibition tournament hosted by the STU Tommies which included university, college and top senior teams in the region.

The men’s volleyball Hurricanes enter second semester play as the 14th ranked team in the country by the CCAA with a 4-2 record that has them in a tie for first in the conference alongside the STU Tommies.

Statistically the ‘Canes are first in kills per set, hitting percentage, assists per set and points per set this season.

Individually, the ‘Canes have four hitters in the top six in the conference in kills per set. Brett Butler and Gordon Veitch are second and third averaging 2.62 and 2.41 kills per set respectively while Kenton Dawkins and Tynan Murphy are fifth and sixth with 2.12 and 2.10 kills averaged per set.

The Dragons are 0-6 on the season and sit in fourth in the ACAA. Head-to-head the ‘Canes have taken all three matchups so far this season, winning 3-0 on November 12th, 13th, and 19th.

On Saturday, the men’s game will begin at 4PM with the women’s game following at 6PM. On Sunday, the men play at 10:30 AM with the women playing at 6PM
